Following the outcome of the November 5, 2013 election, we have been carefully assessing our financial position in anticipation of having to make budget reductions for the 2014-2015 school year – and beyond. Based on the Treasurer’s Five Year Forecast, it will be necessary to reduce expenditures by approximately $50 million, for the budget year beginning July 1, 2014.
Among the reductions being proposed are the closing of seven school buildings. Information on that proposal, the schools involved, and the Community Input meetings can be found on this page.
Following guidelines set forth under Board of Education Policy 3226.1, the Columbus City Schools School Consolidation Team carefully assessed data associated with all of the District’s schools and on February 11 brought a draft recommendation to the Superintendent and Board of Education to close/consolidate seven schools:
- Arlington Park Elementary School
- Brookhaven High School
- Fifth Avenue K-6 International Elementary School
- Independence High School
- Maybury Elementary School
- Monroe Middle School
- Siebert Elementary School
Following two community input meetings, the Columbus City Schools Consolidation Team reevaluated their recommendations. The final recommendation to the Board of Education calls for closing five schools, all of the schools on the original list with the exception of Independence High School and Siebert Elementary School.
The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the recommendation on Tuesday, March 4.
